A brief history of Wallace Historic Homestead

James Wallace

In 1869 Mr John Rouse one of the first settlers in Wandin / Seville selected 40 acres where Wallace Historic Homestead & Wild Cattle Creek Vineyard now stand.

In 1889 Mr James Wallace purchased the 40 acre block from Mr Rouse. He then sold 20 acres and retained 20 acres where he built Wallace House in 1890.

James Wallace married Mary Henderson and raised a family of 6 boys and 2 girls. He became a Councillor of Lilydale Shire on March 21st 1891 and remained on Council till his death in 1942 - a record term of office for the British Commonwealth. He was also Shire President for seven terms.
